FC Santa Claus are coming to town in the all-new Tourneo Custom, which - when Santa's Rovaniemi-based helpers aren't preparing gifts - transports them to their snow-bound games.
More than two million Ford Transits have been sold since the original first appear in 1965. However, for its latest model it has split the range in two and this Transit Custom is the midsized model.
You can get it in two body lengths, a double cab with a second row of seats and a nine-seater mini bus. There will also be a high roof version added to the range in 2014. However, there is no tipper model.
One of the great things with the Transit Custom is that even on short wheel base versions you can fit three Euro pallets in - you can't do that on all mid-sized vans. Also if you need to carry longer loads look -- you have a through hatch in the bulkhead. This means you can carry items up to 3 meters long. There's also tie down rings in the floor are lower walls. What's not so good is that you don't get half wood paneling as standard like on some of its rivals. You can get it as an option though, and what's also useful is the optional super bright load bay lighting which helps when you are working in the dark. The load height is low but you can't get an all wheel drive version.
The Transit Customs payload ranges from 683 to 1484kg. It it has a load bay volume from 5.9 cubic meters up to 6.8 cubic meters. When the high top arrives it will have up to 8.29 cubic meters though this still less than the equivalent VW Transporter
Inside the Transit Customs cab looks more like what you'd expect from a car not a van. In fact the dash design resembles that of a Ford Focus. However, the plastics aren't as plush but then they should be harder wearing. Cubbies spaces really impressive with plenty of cup holders, big door bins, another above the instrument binnacle and storage under the passenger seats. The only problem is that all models don't get a lockable glovebox as standard.
With global commercial vehicle sales expected to jump significantly during the next several years, Ford's all-new 2014 Transit Connect cargo
Transit Connect Van offers North American customers a choice between two fuel-efficient four-cylinder engines -- a standard 2.5-liter and an optional 1.6-liter EcoBoost® estimated to deliver 30+ mpg on the highway.
These powertrain alternatives make Transit Connect Van the gas mileage leader among commercial cargo haulers.
Transit Connect's 2.5-liter engine can also be specified with a compressed natural gas/liquid propane gas (CNG/LPG) preparation package, enabling convenient conversion by Ford-certified upfit specialists.
Both engines come mated to an efficient six-speed automatic transmission, geared for around-town responsiveness and low-rpm highway cruising.
Transit Connect Van offers unexpected features in a high-value package, combined with low operating costs.
This stylish, contemporary cargo van is available with or without second-row seating, and offers useful options like rear view camera, 6.5-inch touch screen display with navigation, and SYNC® with MyFord Touch® -- Ford's highly acclaimed voice-activated mobile communications and entertainment system.
Transit Connect is a One Ford global design delivering substantial capability on a compact overall footprint with urban-friendly maneuverability. It is ideal for small business proprietors and fleets aiming to right-size vehicles to specific duties.
Look for Transit Connect Van to begin arriving in dealerships in North America late next year.
